Okay, so you’ve committed, set the date, and are almost ready to hit the open road! But where will the journey take you? Mapping out your RV road trip is essential to having an incredible, safe, and memorable experience. Although some prefer to go where the wind takes them, it’s still a good idea to have a plan. RV trips take planning and preparation whether we admit it or not. If you’re gearing up for the trip of a lifetime, here’s how to map out and prepare for your journey.

Make the Most of Your RV Road Trip

Maybe you’re a seasoned RV-er and are looking for new ways to explore the country. Or perhaps you’re a first-timer and have no idea where to begin. No matter your level of experience, it’s possible to make the most of your RV road trip with proper planning. It all starts with one simple question: where do I want to go?

Choose the Right RV For Trip Length and Type

Not only should you know where your travels will take you, but you should also plan your trip’s duration. This will come in handy when you choose the kind of RV to travel with. Will you be taking a local trip? Are you planning for a week or a month? Will you be driving in mountainous, rocky terrain? Or will you be driving in beachy flatlands? These questions will inform your vehicle selection, and get you on the right track.

Come Up With a Budget

You’ll also want to set a reasonable budget before making your trek. If you’re looking to splurge on campsites and luxury destinations, fit that into your budget. Or maybe you’re looking to be more frugal on your RV getaway, and want to save money. This way, you’ll know to find free or low-cost RV campsites to accommodate your budget.

Book in Advance

Book your destination in advance! The most sought-after locations and campsites are booked months, sometimes years, in advance. For the safest and easiest experience, make sure you know where you’re going, and when you’ll be going. Booking campsites in advance will save you a load of stress and time.

Research RV-Accessible Routes

It’s also a good idea to research routes that allow RVs and larger commercial vehicles. Come prepared to know which routes and interstates you’ll take along the way. Make note of gas stations, pit stops, and rest areas on your route, especially if you’re traveling with family. Bring a physical map, too. You’ll never know when you’ll lose service or lose access to a GPS.
